On 14th November 2024, Northlight Green Services courtesy of the Nwoya District Local Council Five Chairman, had a radio talk show on 104.1 Favour FM, about the land rights of women and youth and in particular of widows, orphans and PWDs.
We presented some key baseline findings and spoke about rampant land disputes at family level that inhibits a peaceful co-existence and development. We highlighted the rampant violation of human rights of women and youth, especially, widows and orphans’ nieces and nephews who have been unlawfully evicted from their land or denied land rights.
We believe land disputes and insecure land tenure directly undermines economic development, peaceful co-existence and prosperity of the people.
Land use is prohibited when disputes exist. Uncertain land ownership discourages investment on the land which is the main source of livelihood for the majority population and especially women in Northern Uganda. This partly explains why the sub-region has a poverty rate of over 68% the second highest in the country after Karamoja region. NGS will continue to participate any forum to advocate for the land rights of women and youth.
