UNLOCKING THE POWER OF DRAGON FRUIT FARMING IN NORTHERN UGANDA
Did you know that dragon fruits, also known as Pitaya, is not just a stunning fruit but also packed with lots of health benefits? With its vibrant pink, purple or yellow skin and striking white, maroon or red flesh, it’s irresistible on any serving. Dragon fruit is an excellent choice for boosting immunity, improving digestion, and maintaining healthy skin because its high in antioxidants, vitamin C, fiber, and essential minerals. Its also believed to fight against cancer and diabetics.
Here at Northlight Green Services, we have taken on dragon fruit farming as an alternative source of livelihood against environmentally degrading activities such as brick laying, charcoal burning among others that are not only common in our community but also traceable in other communities of Northern Uganda. Right here in Gulu City, our plants are over ten months old now, in great health and resilient. We hope in the next 2-4 months to see some flowers, buds and fruits coming forth and we are excited.
Great thanks and appreciation goes to our partner, Hanns Seidel Foundation‘s Global Project for Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change (HSF GMACC) and Hanns Seidel Foundation Kenya for the valuable support towards the establishment of the learning centre.
